Hi
Everyone
A quick catch up on what's on in the world of cycling - quite a bit as
it happens, with lots of out of town events coming up, all our usual
club events, PLUS a new Hill Climb series. And a social training ride
over in the Waikato.
News from Tauranga City Council
To all 'Road' Cyclist,
Western Bay District Council & Tauranga City Council (administered
by Western Bay District Council) will be reconstructing Welcome Bay
Road from Waitao Road to the top of Ngapeke "hill" on WB. Construction
planned to start April 2011 and finish June 2011.
Over this middle period we would suggest Road bikes don't use
Welcome Bay Road
Club note - We will find an alternative route for the Sunday rides
during this period.
Make cycling count on Census Day
Investment in cycling has fallen behind demand, partly because cycling
is undercounted in the Census. Let's fix that.
Because much cycling is recreational, or for leisure, it doesn't get
measured by the Census, which only measures trips to work.
http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/people_and_communities/geographic-areas/commuting-patterns-in-nz-1996-2006/car-bus-bike-or-train.aspx#cyclists
Definition: 'Main means of travel to work' is the method by which the
respondent, aged 15 years and over, travelled the longest distance to
work on 7 March 2006, for example by bicycle, bus, walking or jogging.
http://www.stats.govt.nz/Census/about-2006-census/information-by-variable/main-means-of-travel-to-work.aspx
So ride on Census day and make cycling count.

Tuesday Night Rides
With the faster riders spreading themselves much better across Groups 1
to 3, we will turn our attention to the other end of the spectrum this
week, trying a split of Group 4. The pace of "38 in the tail wind"
appears to be just a few km/h too fast for a few, but Group 5 a bit too
slow, so we will trial a split, having Group 4 Regular (doing 38km/h)
and Group 4 Lite (doing around 34/35km/h). Hopefully someone from those
riders who have requested this group will step forward and be "bunch
monitor" for that group, to keep the pace on target.
With the daylight hours getting shorter, make sure you strap your
lights back on for Tuesday nights (check the batteries too) and switch
them on.
Wednesday Night Crits
This new event is catching on fast, with increasing numbers every week.
For those yet to try it, it is at Whakakake St at the industrial area
at The Lakes. Be out there by 6.00pm, for a 6.30 start.
Distance is 15 laps.
The intent is to run this event year round, with good lighting in this
area, it makes an ideal place to ride after dark and will be a welcome
break from the windtrainer over winter.
Thursday Night Races
These little races out at Te Tumu Road have gone very well this year.
If you are one of those who has said "I must get out to do one of
those", come on out. Start time is 6.15pm, distance is 26km (2 laps)
and spot prizes (and prizes for the podium places) each night. Handicap
start, so everyone has the chance to win.
New Event Series
This is a new Hill Climb Series, one a month, with spot prizes at each
event and prizes for the overall series winners. After the first ride,
people will be graded, so you will be competing against people of
similar ability.
Start time will be 2.00pm, registration from 1.30pm, entry fee $2

I have attached the article from the New Zealand Road Cycling mag, I
have approx 1 car load of Sunday morning riders keen to spend the day
driving to Otorohanga and riding the loop and we though we would put it
there to any else keen to join. The riders that have shown an interest
ride C,,C+,and B groups on Tuesday nights. We are looking at
Sunday the 13th March but are flexible on the date. It really
will be a social training ride but it is 130kms with hills but we will
all stick together or split groups if we get the numbers.
Read the article and contact me if youre interested.
