Club Races 2011 - Results, Reports and Photos

5 Angels Hilly Time Trial - Saturday 15th Oct

Good weather for the 5 Angels Race, which took in 5 of the hills off Welcome Bay Road, finishing 10km up Ohauiti Road (where the seal used to finish). Total distance was 66km, with some Riders started at minute intervals. We had a good cross section of club members riding, all ages and abilities, plus a tandem.

Quickest time of the day was, once again, Daniel Molyneux, successfully defending his title and taking 5 minutes off his previous time, despite the road works and the start being 50m or so further back.

Riders enjoyed hot soup at the finish, and the two spot prizes of $20 "gift vouchers" (that appeared to be green, with the Queens head on them) going to Nik Ansorge and Tony Fairweather.

Thanks to Greg Taylor for organising the race, Mark Ireland for timekeeping, plus all our marshalls - Brian Kelly, Brian Meville, Raewyne Cathie, Talbot Munro and Ryan Pratt. Special thanks to Jan Taylor for providing the refreshments.

Winter Series Race 4*

Te Tumu road 09 July 2011

True winter conditions for the final race of the series, with gusty winds and a noticeable wind chill. And just to add to the excitement, a downpour of rain for the first lap! The handicapping worked pretty well for everyone, except for Nik Ansorge, who was left to battle on his own on scratch, after Lucas Finucane pulled the pin on the first lap, sufferingfrom the effects of a cold.

It was left to the break riders to hunt down the rest of the field. They caught the big 5 minute bunch on the final lap. Nigel Giles made his move
at the bridge turning on to Te Tumu Road and despite a last minute effort by the 12 strong bunch, they were unable to reel him in and he crossed the line comfortably in front.

The day claimed a few victims, with Tom Carter breaking a gear cable minutes before the start, and his dad Mark getting a puncture.

Special mention has to be made of young Josh Collins, who has raced all four races on his own, riding the course at a very steady pace - identical times for each lap this week.

Thanks to Tom and Angela for their photo finish work again.

*Overall Series Result* - A great overall victory to Andy Collins, with 179 points, Kees Swanink taking 2nd place with 166 points and Sean O'Brien with 161 points

Winter Series Race 3 -  July 2 2011

Hi Everyone
Perfect weather for race 3. Sunshine, a light southerly and about 15°C. 28 Starters and great handicapping. Scratch caught everyone 2km from the finish for a huge bunch sprint. The photo finish camera was in action so all placings were easy to pick.
Young Nik Ansorge is developing a pretty good sprint and he took the win a bike length clear of Lucas Finucane.
The last race is next Saturday 1.30pm sign in. 2pm start. Remember there is good prizemoney.

Winter Series Race 2 Te Tumu Road 25 June 2011

A good turnout at Te Tumu this afternoon, for Race 2 of the Winter Series. Everyone was so shocked by having a fine Saturday for a change, that they barely noticed the head wind on the back straight down Kaituna Road. Great ride by the limit riders, Darren Finucane and Stephen Lewis, who managed to hold off some big angry chasing groups until well into the final lap.

The handicapping was a bit of a guess, after the giant bunch finish in Race 1, and while there were a few riders who appeared to have been rather optimistic about their chances, the bulk of the field finished quite close together.

After 2 races, we now have 3 riders tied for points at the top of the table - Sean O'Brien, Lucas Finucane and Nik Ansorge, all on 85 points. Full points list is at the far right of the table below.

A big thanks to Richard Bates and Angie Carter for their slick photo finish work - we managed to get through another race without race numbers, a problem we hope to have sorted for next week.
Race 2 Results:
Weather - Fine, Windy
Temperature - 14.7 deg
Wind - 27. 8km/h WSW, with peak gust of 46.3km/h WSW

Winter Series Race 1 Te Tumu Road 11 June 2011

Hi EveryoneThe first race of the Tauranga winter series kicked off yesterday. You would not believe it but the weather was fine and sunny with virtually no wind. The rain stopped at Te Puke driving over and out came the sun.
34 riders participated and photo finish technology was provided by Angie Carter using Tom's new Canon EOS SLR camera.Tom had to decide between the camera and racing wheels for his birthday. Can you believe it he choose the camera. With 27 riders in the main bunch at the finish the rapid fire crystal clear photos enabled picking the finishing positions even in the absence of race numbers.
We decided all riders would do 3 laps. For the next 3 races U17 and U15 will do 3 laps.
Next Saturday will be handicapped so those who just hung on to the main bunch dont worry you will get a head start next week but you have to work to stay away.
Nik Ansorge took line honours closely followed by Lucas Finucane, Clinton Stanshill and Tom Carter. Get used to seeing Tom up there. He has just turned 14 and finished 3rd in the North Harbour Junior Tour 3 weeks ago in the U15 boys. Dad (Mark) was 5th.

Time Trial - Te Tumu road Sat 09 April 2011

Report by Ryan who also organised the event - thanks.

9/3 20.6degrees S6 G7 80% humidity

Ideal conditions for the re-run of the club time trial.  The only issue was the humidity, which gave the 11 riders the feeling of a head wind from every direction.

Due to everyone being all over the course at start time, the starting order was mixed.  This unfortunately left Freddie Glen-Vile as the last to start.  The only complaint was that the final lap was quite lonely for him.

Richard Bates led from start to finish, just breaking the hour mark.  Lucas Finucane was just over a minute behind, breaking his previous record.  Tom and Lucas both set fast times in their U15 & U17 grades respectively, and are the 2011 junior champs.

Kees took a wrong turn on the first lap, the reason for his slightly shorter distance.

The remaining riders had an enjoyable morning, all 40km riders managed to break the 80 minute/30kph mark.

Hill Climb No 1 - Sat 05 March 2011 - Waitao Road

First race turned out to be quite successful, considering the dodgy weather and short notice.  15 determined riders turned them and pushed themselves up the 4km climb in Welcome Bay.

Niklas Ansorge was the first to set off and set the quickest time of the day.  Tim Mills was the second rider on the road and managed to set an admirable time, but not close to Niklas.  Thomas Carter was looking to be the closest to Niklas, being the 11th rider off, until Richard Bates came sprinting up past Nigel Hines on the to record the second fastest time of the day.
They have been seeded now, so anyone else interested in joining can see how their fellow riders got on.  A big thanks to Tim Mills, Avanti Plus at the Mount for supporting the series with spot prizes and signs.

The next race is scheduled for the 12th March, Oropi Road, starting opposite the Golf Course.  Looking forward to seeing more riders this time, particularly of the higher calibre kind.  Perhaps some Finucanes, Molyneux, Wright, Pugh, DeRijk, Lowe, Lett and so forth.  Also, ladies, you are welcome to join.  Show some of the men up with your climbing abilities.  Turn the Hill Climb into a real hard fought competition.
Niklas also informed me that Waitao is only 3.86kms long, not 4.03kms.  Which changes the average gradient to 6.9%.  The summit is 293m above sea level, with 270m vertical from the start line.
