Club Races 2010 - Results, Reports and Photos

Club Road Championships, Te Puna 4 December 2010

For those who weren't at the club champs, you missed a great day. Ideal conditions for riding, a good turnout and some very competitive racing. And the view from the top of the Minden made the climb worthwhile.

There were worthy winners in all grades and it was good to see our junior riders taking away plenty of medals. Congratulations to Daniel Molyneux for taking out the title of Club Champ, for the second year running.

You can catch some pictures of the action at Duncan Tindalls website http://www.tri-photos.co.uk/TCCChamps/index.html
Raewyne Cathie and Angela Finucane also took a whole pile of photos, we do have these on a CD and some may appear on the club website in due course.

Thanks also to the entire committee for organising the day - the work starts well beforehand, ordering medals and sorting out the venue, arranging spot prizes etc, plus what happens on the day. The good turnout and great weather made it all worthwhile.

A big thanks also to our sponsor for the day - Koops Cycles. Koops are a good supporter of the club, so please remember them when you are looking for anything to do with your bike.

Results:
(Note - where the overall points were the same for two riders, the placing in the road race then determined who finished ahead)

Winter Series 2010

Hi All

After 4 races, with a variety of weather conditions, one crash and several punctures, we finally have the winners of the 2010 Winter Series. Going into the 4th round, the points were very close and for the top ten, it really did come down to the results of the final race.

In the 3 lap series, the prizes are $100 for first, $75 for second and $50 for third. Congratulations to Daniel Finucane for taking out the win. As Mark Ireland was involved with the handicapping/organising, the third place prize will go to the 4th place rider. We have two on the same points, so the decider is the placing in the last race, hence Ari Finucane gets it.

The committee will look at some prizes for the 2 lap series - with the win going to young Tom Carter.

Prizes will be posted out.

We hope you enjoyed the series

Winter Series Race 4 Results

Te Tumu Road, Maketu, 10 July 2010

Weather - Fine, 13.5 deg, Wind: Southerly, 8km/h, max gust 27km/h

Another race and yet another wind direction, this time a head wind up Te Tumu Road to the finish line. Numbers were down a bit today, with both the scratch bunch and the break bunch (4 min) missing a few riders.

The scratch riders managed to convince the handicapper to allow them to start a minute earlier than scheduled and on the last lap caught most of the riders either at the end of Kaituna Rd or along Te Tumu Road. However, Loren Elphick, who rode the entire race on her own, starting on limit, managed to hold them off, finishing in first place, with almost 2 minutes to spare.

Times were about a minute slower than in Race 3, on average, but still very respectable.

AvantiPlus Mt Maunganui provided some spot prizes for todays race; thanks Tim! Thanks also to the Two Brians for running the race for us.

Results for the series will be posted in a separate email.

Winter Series Race 3 Results

Te Tumu Rd circuit, Saturday 26th June, 3 laps 39km (unless shown otherwise).
Weather - overcast, 13.6 deg, wind ENE 7.4km/h, max gust NNE 13km/h

Last Saturdays race proved again how different conditions at Te Tumu Rd make for very different racing. The wind was relatively light and blowing from yet another direction - the third wind shift since the series started. The favourable conditions seemed to very much favour the riders on handicap, their times coming down, while the scratch riders put in times fairly consistent with the previous race. The 5 minute group, with Rick Lowe very much driving the pace, managed to cut 3 minutes off their time. The big 8 minute group likewise put in their fastest ride to date, cutting nearly a minute off last weeks time.

The 5 minute riders caught the 8 minute group shortly after the start of the third lap and from that point, the chase was on to hunt down the front markers, with the catch happening just after the bridge at the start of Te Tumu Road. Unfortunately, as the bunches merged, a crash occurred and several riders hit the deck. This effectively stopped two thirds of the field, and while some then opted to carry on back to the finish, others stayed behind to assist the fallen riders. At the finish line, it was not a fully contested sprint, with some choosing just to ride across the line. All of which makes the recorded times even more remarkable.

Hence, the finish results were probably not what would have occured without the crash. Given the number of riders involved in this incident, the judges have therefore decided to apply the rules for a Tour, where if you are involved in a crash in the last 3 kilometres, you are credited with bunch time. As we are working on points in this series, that credit will be by way of points. Points have been allocated to the three bunches involved and all riders in that group that crashed have been allocated those points, regardless of whether they crossed the line with the bunch, or rolled across some time later. These riders have a "C" next to their points for Race 3. Pleased to advise that everyone did manage to eventually ride in, so no serious injuries.

If anyone outside of the crash group thinks their actual recorded placing in Race 3 is incorrect, please email back and we will make the necessary adjustments.

Race 4, the final race of the series, will be on Saturday July 10th at 2.00pm

Winter Series Race 2  Te Tumu Rd circuit, Saturday 19th June, 3 laps 39km (unless shown otherwise).

Report by Mark

Weather - overcast, 15.6 deg, wind E 14.8km/h, max gust E 22.2km/h

A completely different wind direction for Race 2 of the Winter Series, with as close to a tail wind as you will ever get on the big long back straight on Kaituna Road.
The more favourable winds, combined with a very large group on 8 minute handicap, threw up some interesting results. Most people improved on their times from the previous week, by as much as 5 minutes. The higher speeds on Kaituna Road made it seem even rougher than normal, with plenty of loose chip seal to make for interesting moments if you got too close to the edge of the road.

Paul Mahon was clearly the strongest rider in the 8 minute group, despite not having raced for some time, but sportingly rode to the pace of the rest of the group. A few hard pulls by Tim Manktelow and Jim Critchely stretched the group several times, but there were still 8 riders in the group by the time the scratch riders caught them in the last few kilometres of the race. Despite Daniel and Lucas leading the charge past the bunch, they were unable to beat Paul in the final sprint, but still collected enough points to remain comfortably at the top of the points table.

Quite a few punctures, with young Lucas Fairweather suffering his second puncture in two weeks.

Lucas Finucane & Daniel Finucane have each been penalised 10 points for "offensive & undesirable language" as they crossed the line.

Winter Series Race 1 - Te Tumu Road circuit, 3 laps 39km, 12 June 2010

Report by Mark Ireland
Weather - Fine, 16.5deg, wind NW 20.4km/h, max gust WNW 37km/h

Despite some very threatening looking skys, the pre-race drizzle quickly cleared and some 30 souls enjoyed fine, mild but rather windy conditions out at the popular Te Tumu Rd circuit, near Maketu.
It was a good chance to see how the fitness was holding up (or otherwise) now we are into winter, with all the short days and rainy weather we have had recently.

Race 1 is always a mass start (everyone starting in one group), but the group splintered into two within the first couple of kilometres. Over the following laps, the groups continued to split, with groups of 2 or 3 crossing the finish line. The only exception was a relatively large group of 10, who enjoyed working together over the 39km race.

Race 2 of the series is on NEXT Saturday, 19th June, 2.00pm start, $2 entry fee, same circuit. Race will be handicap start, those handicaps will be based largely on todays results. Those who did not ride today are still more than welcome to take part - and bring a friend with you!

Thanks as always to The Two Brians for running the race, along with all the others that helped out.

Club Race, Paengaroa circuit, 6 March 2010sprint

A relatively small turn out at Paengaroa, in warm, sunny and fairly windy conditions. The wind was the opposite to normal, with a head wind on Old Coach Road.
It was particularly gusty at the bottom of the sharp climb up to Maniatutu Road. However, this was more than made up for by a brilliant tail wind down Maniatutu Road and SH2.

The A Grade stayed together for their 3 laps, while the B Grade splintered on the first time up Old Coach Road.

The final sprint in the A Grade was very close (see photo), with Lucas Finucane pipping current club champ Daniel Molyneau on the line by the smallest of margins.

Te Tumu Road 27 Feb 2010

Hi everyone

A good turnout to todays Individual Time Trial Champs, on the Te Tumu Road circuit at Maketu. Warm conditions, with average winds, although an unusual wind direction - a head wind down Maketu Road, with wind shifting direction as the afternoon progressed. Consensus was that the new seal on Kaituna Road has improved the road surface a bit, so that is good news for those that race on Thursday nights.

There were two punctures, Adam Francis still managing to cross the line with his, but Tim Manktelows tyre was destroyed and he was unable to complete the race.

Paul Rogers secured the Open title for the fourth time in five years, with a great time of 55:57.tt9
Niklas Ansorge took out the Under 17 title.
