Race Results - Old Coach Rd / Maniatutu Rd circuit, Paengaroa - 22 November 2008 47km (3 laps)

A very warm, sunny day out at Paengaroa. Head wind on the short leg down Maniatutu Rd, otherwise good conditions. Everyone started together, with the field quickly splitting into 3 main groups up Old Coach Rd. The groups further splintered, with the sharp climb before Maniatutu Rd proving to be quite testing by the third lap.
Many of those riding agreed that this is possibly the best race circuit the club has.paengaroa1

Te Tumu Road - Sat  26 July  26km

Despite bad weather in Tauranga, the conditions at Te Tumu were quite reasonable much better in fact than those for Race 3. The wind provided a rare tail wind down Kaituna Rd, and at 20.9km/h, was much more gentle than the 43km/h experienced in town (where it was gusting up to 62km/h).  Even the rain was considerably lighter thanit was even at Te Puke just a few k's down the road.   Bit nippy at 6 deg though!

However, in fairness to the large number of points holders who had beenput off by the weather in town (and the storm warnings),the decision was made to postponeit to this weekend.  The 12 folk that did turn up still had a race however, a mass start two lapper (26km).

Winter Series Race 3 - Te Tumu Road - Sat 12 July

24 hardy cyclists braved unpleasant conditions for Race 3 of the Winter Series, at Te Tumu on Saturday.

The race started in heavy rain, with the first leg down Maketu Road being a side wind, before turning into the full force of the wind on Kaituna Road. The long back straight was exposed to a very strong side/head wind that made it difficult to hold the bike on the road or to get any shelter from the rider in front. Fortunately, the ride back up Te Tumu Rd provided some relief, with a reasonable tail wind through that section.

The rain eased somewhat on the subsequent laps, but the gusty winds still made for tough riding.

The conditions also played havoc with the handicaps - as they were based on results from Race 2, which had been held in relatively good weather. The stronger riders seem to be less affected by the conditions, but two of the 6 minute boys still managed to hold off the "scratchies" and took line honours.

Despite the weather, there was a good crowd of spectators. Thanks also to Brian Kelly and Brian Melville for standing out in the rain to time everyone and put the signs out.

Race Results - Joyce Rd 28th June 2008463

Not a bad turnout considering the bitterly cold conditions on the tough Joyce Rd circuit. We were very lucky with the rain - it stopped shortly before we started and then rolled back in just as we all headed home. The Open and Under 17 riders did 3 laps (33km), with the Under 15's doing 2 laps.
Everyone started together, but the steep Joyce Rd climb back up to Pyes Pa Road quickly split the field. The hill was made even less pleasant that normal, thanks to the dead possum at the top that was attracting the interest of a hawk. A slight tail wind up Pyes Pa Rd was a bonus, with the same wind quickly cooling everyone off on the descent back down Joyce Rd. The winner was Mark Crowther, despite his arriving at the race start with only seconds to spare.

Thanks again to the two Brians for standing out in the cold to take the times and set out the road signs for us.465

Winter Series Race 1 - Te Tumu Road - Sat 07 June0014

A great turnout of 41 competitors at Saturdays first round of the Winter Series, held out at Te Tumu. It was rather cold (OK, it was very cold!), but we managed to avoid getting wet, despite the rain that was hanging over the Papamoa hills. There was a nice tailwind down Maketu Rd, but Kaituna Rd was tough going, with a blustery wind of around 30km/h, which affected everyones times. The quickest time was 1:02:12, while last year it was 59:35.

This was a "mass start" race, with the Open grade riders starting first, and the Juniors starting 1 minute behind.

Tauranga Club Time Trial Champs Results – Saturday 22nd March - Te Tumu 938

Hot sunny weather for the TT Champs, with wind steadily increasing during the afternoon. We used the Te Tumu Road circuit as usual, everyone having to cope with the incredibly rough tarseal on Kaituna Rd three times. Only one incident this year, Heath Lett puncturing one of his tubular tyres.

Congratulations to Steve Came on being the new club Time Trial Champ for 2008. Steves time was matched by a visitor from Morrinsville – right down to the 10ths of seconds – 57:21:74.

Thanks to the two Brians, Mark and Rebeccas Dad for officiating.

Club Race, 8/03/08, Armstrong Rd, Te Puna 36km, 6 laps

It was perfect early autumn conditions for the club race at Te Puna on Saturday, with light winds and temperatures in the mid-20's.
A good field of 18 riders participated, with a handicap start consisting of 3 bunches. The limit bunch split up on the first lap, with the testing Armstrong Rd quickly revealing differences in fitness and age.
The "4 minute" bunch put in a blistering pace over the early part of the race, quickly catching the limit riders. This group then split, reducing to four riders, with the remainder riding the course individually.
The scratch bunch stayed largely intact, but were still unable to close down the lead of the 4 minute bunch, finishing just over a minute behind them. Richard Bates make a spectaular sprint for the line to lead in the scratch riders, with the remainder of the field coming in in dribs and drabs.

Line honours went to Paul Mahon, who sprinted well clear of the other "4 minute" riders.
