April 2010 update

Hi Everyone

Hope you are all adjusting to life without the Tuesday night rides!

A reminder that THIS SUNDAY we have our Free Coffee Sunday Morning ride. After we reach the Information Centre at The Mount, we will then make our way across the harbour bridge to Zaggers on Chapel Street.

The club will pay for coffee for club members, you pay for any food.

If by some chance it is too wet to ride, the coffee will still be on - just meet at Zaggers at 9.00am.

While is a quiet month for cycling here in Tauranga, our riders are very busy competing at major events around the country.

Last weekend was the Te Awamutu Junior Tour. Courteney Lowe dominated the Womens races, while Ari Finucane took out 4th place in the U15 event. Great effort by Ari, competing against much older riders. Daniel and Lucas Finucane have also moved up a grade this year, riding in the U19 category, again against older and more experienced riders. Daniel continued his recent good form, finishing in a competitive position in every race, while Lucas bounced back after an off day on the Saturday.

On Sunday 18th, a fairly large contingent of Tauranga riders will be competing at the Waikato/BOP Road Champs in Morrinsville. Courteney Lowe, Sue Galpin, Grier Fuller, Heath Lett, Rick Lowe, Andy Collins, Richard Coffey, Greg Taylor, Richard Bates, Bernie Ryan, Keith Thompson and the three Finucane boys will all be there.

The National Champs are at the end of the month, starting on Thursday 29th April, down in Hastings.

Updated Calendar
I have attached the updated calendar, taking us through to the end of the year. It is a work in progress at this stage, as I am waiting for the committee meeting this Wednesday before adding in the local club races. As you will see, there are a heap of races / fun rides nearly every weeken for the next few months.

Two main date to keep in mind - just under 5 weeks until the Tuesday and Thursday night rides start again AND around about 12 weeks until the Round Taupo ride.

This week
On Saturday, Tauranga will be represented at the Waikato/BOP Centre Time Trial Champs at Gordonton.
Richard Coffey, Deidre Lack, Heath Lett, Jasin Goldsmith, Tom Scott, Jason White and Lance Muller are all heading across to the Waikato to compete. Best of luck!

Back home, we have the normal Sunday Training Ride locally, while also on Sunday there is third ride in the Wakaroc Ride/Race series, which is as follows:
Sunday 4th September

Ph Stephen Cox (07) 843-6215 or 0274-925-672
Register between 8.00 & 9.30, ride starts at 10.00am

Monday 5th September
Tauranga Road Cycling Clubs monthly Monday evening drink/chat
Time - 6.00pm
Venue - Coyote Bar & Restaurant, The Strand, Tauranga

Sunday Ride
Looks like we are still having to divert down Kairua Road this weekend. We are getting big numbers on Sunday and last weeks ride was a little untidy through Welcome Bay. Just remember that there are other people using the roads, so we have to stick to two abreast (or single file on SH2) and show some courtesy to people trying to overtake. We may have to split the bunch at Papamoa if it gets much larger (could let the faster ones have a quicker run back to the Mount perhaps), but we'll see how things go.

Glass
Iris Thomas from Cycle Action Tauranga tells me that Totara St has been swept, hopefully they will do the cycle lanes on Marine Parade soon, it is still shocking through there. As is Cameron Road.

It is worthwhile e-mailing or calling Council to let them know (nicely) where the bad spots are.
info@tauranga.govt.nz or you could contact the top man mayor@tauranga.govt.nz - Stuart Crosby says he is sick of dealing with trees, he might like to tackle the glass for us instead.
Or you could do what Kevin Jerome did on Chapel St - got out with a broom and swept it himself!

Thats about it for now, hopefully see you at one of the events this weekend or on Monday night,

Newsletter April 2005

In the last newsletter (which was ages ago, back in 2004) we mentioned our drive to increase the club membership and weed out the “free loaders” from our events.

It’s pleasing to report that the move was a huge success – from a low of only 35 members in December, we now have 93 members. With that growth comes the need to lift our game to cater for all you new people. We’ve run a number of successful events over summer, some old ones and some new ones and have a number of new things we will try over coming months. Let us know what you would like to see – either at the monthly Monday night get-togethers or at a committee meeting or just flick us an e-mail – the club now has it’s own e-mail address, www.taurangacyclingclub@xtra.co.nz

To keep the interest up over winter, we will be trying Saturday events twice a month, using some new circuits as well as the old favourites. Remember that we still have the Tuesday Night Spin Sessions at Pack’N’Pedal right through until daylight saving kicks in again, plus the Sunday rides continue year round. This ride is working well (with around 30 riders most weeks) and we are grateful that Talbot, Raewyne, Malcolm etc opened up their ride to the rest of us a couple of years back. They have been doing this ride as a group for about 15 years.

If you’ve been to an event out of town and would “like to share with the group”, please send your story in – we’d love to hear from you.

Lastly, if you are out on the roads in the mornings or evenings now, try to avoid riding into the rising or setting sun. Bikes are very hard to see in these conditions now and it is not unheard of for cyclists to get run over. Check the batteries in your lights too before you strap them back on your bike.

Winter……who needs it?!

Welcome!

Welcome to our new members. Too many to name here unfortunately. Easy to spot your fellow club members out on the road, with their yellow helmet dot. Although putting faces to names and vice versa is not easy – my mission this winter is to figure out who all 93 members are!

Tuesday/Thursday Night Review

The committee has had a review of events that we ran over summer. Thursday nights went well, 20 to 30 riders out at Te Tumu most nights and everyone seems happy with the way it operates.

Tuesday Nights also went pretty well on the whole. Big numbers were an issue – up to 130 riders and the now infamous 2nd Group did cause a few problems. Next summer we plan to have another “middle” group to trim the bunch sizes down and to separate the faster riders from those that ride in a desperate fashion to stay in contact with them. Some folk lost sight of the fact it was a training ride I think. Plus there has been a demand for a super casual group, for the cyclists that can only get out once a week and aren’t as fit as the riders in the Casual group. We’ll give it a try.

The other change will be a group leader for all groups – the 3rd and 4th group worked in part because there is someone taking control.

We will have to keep an eye on traffic growth – we will probably reach a point at some stage where the circuit we use now will just be too busy to use. By that stage, some of the rural sealing that WBOPDC is doing will be completed and we might be able to find a suitable circuit away from the heavy traffic.

The BBQ that we were to have after a Tuesday ride prior to Christmas was eventually held on a Sunday morning in March. Very nice cooked breakfast (courtesy of Tony and Robyn Fairweather and Brian Melville) at Pilot Bay. Everyone felt it was much nicer and more relaxing than after the Tuesday ride anyway, so we will probably do the same again next summer.

New Road Consultation

The Tauranga Road Cycling Club is recognised by Transit NZ as one of the official bodies that it must consult with by law when constructing new roads. As part of that, we have been invited to meet with Transit representatives to discuss the proposed 4 lane eastern bypass road from Te Maunga to Te Puke. They want to designate it a motorway, which means no bikes allowed. However, they advise the existing highway would remain as an alternative route and would probably be better for cycling due to much lower traffic. We’ll do everything we can to make sure that we still have good access from the coastal strip across to the Papamoa hills and Welcome Bay Rd. We’ll keep you posted!

Monthly Coffee & Chat

These are social get-together, once a month on a Monday evening. The idea is just to have a chat/drink away from the bikes (although you may choose to bike to the venue). Held on the first Monday of each month, 6.00pm at Coyote on The Strand. The ones we’ve had so far have been very successful, so hopefully you can join us there soon. Dates are shown on the calendar

Calendar

Refer to the calendar for all the rides that we currently know of. We’ll update you as new events come to hand.
