Junior Cycling Results

POWERCO QUEENS BIRTHDAY TOUR - 3 to 5 JUNE

On Queens Birthday weekend, Ash Hough and Philip Hudson rode in the Powerco Tour of Taranaki, a road race of 5 stages over 3 days.  The course was set in the countryside below Mt Taranaki with a total of 140km of racing out of Normanby, Statford and Lepperton.  Ash and Phillip rode in the U17 grade with about 30 others.  Aside from the first stage on the Saturday morning, Ash never left the top 5 all weekend and come home 4th overall, just over 1minute behind the winner Tom David of Auckland, and over 6 minutes in front of 6th place.  The top 5 dominated the field, swapping the lead until the 8km time trial which dictated the final results.

With next year still in this grade, Phillip Hudson rode very well starting with a time bonus in the first stage and finishing in 7th place
overall.  A great effort from a very promising young cyclist.

The weather was cold and windy with heavy rain on the Sunday and Monday making conditions treacherous. Sleet falling at the start line of the last race is not something that Tauranga Cyclists normally experience!

WAIKATO BOP SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP - 8 JUNE

Ash Hough, Phillip Hudson, Robert Duytshoff, Courtney Lowe, David Skelton, Owen Millar, Tracey Steens and William Marshall competed in the Waikato/Bop Secondary Schools Cycling Championships held at Roto-o-rangi School, south of Cambridge.

The racing consisted of a 6km time trial and a 30km road race on the same day.

David Skelton did well to finish 10th overall in the U15 grade.

In the U17 grade, Ash won the time trial, outright beating the U17 and U19 riders by 15 seconds, and went on to win the afternoon road race by a convincing 100m over Chris Scott of Te Awamutu.  Starting with a fast time trial, Phillip Hudson had an unfortunate mechanical in the road race and with no service vehicle support, could not finish the race.  From the field of 22 U17boys, solid performances also came from Robert Duytshoff for 4th and Owen Millar and William Marshall.

In the girls U17 event, Courteney Lowe raced hard to take 1st overall but due to a timekeepers error did not know this until 2 days after the event when the times were reviewed!  As an up-and-coming junior rider she certainly has achieved some great results so far.  Well done.  The only other female competitor from our club was Tracey Steens whose consistency
paid off with 2 second places for 2nd overall.

TWIN PEAKS TOUR - MANAWATU 17 JUNE

The Twin Peaks tour is a 3 stage single day road race based in the Manawatu.  This year it was part of the 3 day BikeNZ Development camp for the top junior U17 cyclists selected from all over NZ which was attended by Ash Hough and Courteney Lowe. The race stages were from Pahiatua to Pongaroa and return in freezing conditions, a distance of about 120km and containing 2 climbs of about 500 vertical metres.  A 6km time trial was held in the small town of Pongaroa at about midday.

Ash placed 4th overall with a convincing second place in the uphill last stage finish and won the "King of the Mountain" title, beating some more favoured opponents and under 1minute behind first place.  Courteney Lowe came home in 7th place junior girl, beating many more experienced than herself.  Both cyclists seemed to relish the cold, hilly conditions andproduced good performances in front of the NZ coaches and selectors.

Thanks to Stephen Hough for these reports.
