Fine weather brought out a record number of competitors and spectators for the 2007 Club Champs. Over 50023 people were present, with 36 competitors starting the time trial down Te Puna Road and back.

As expected, Steve Came set a blistering pace, covering the course in 7 min 50 sec, narrowly beating current Waikato/BOP Under 19 road race champion, Philip Hudson. Quite a few riders ended up with identical times – 3 riders on 9 min 31 secs.

The road race was then seeded from times set in the time trial, with some adjustment based on known ability over the longer distances.

The B Grade quickly split into two divisions and in hindsight, we could have done with a fifth grade to better026 match up riders of the same ability. If we get similar numbers in 2008, we will consider doing this. Visitor Sally Fraser rode with the B Grade, but was not included in calculations of placings for the Time Trial or Road Race.

The A grade were given the bell a lap early, so only rode 54km instead the adverstised 60km

In the D Grade, a rider was relegated for taking pace from the B Grade race.

After a short break, riders tackled the Minden Road hill climb. Unfortunately, we had timing problems and so other than for the A grade, the hill climb was excluded from the overall results.

We will run a separate hill climb event shortly and award the medals then.

For the overall results, the riders with the least number of points were the winners. Where riders were equal on points, the finish position in the road race was used as a tie breaker.037

Thanks to Brian Melville for setting out the course and signs, Darrell Finucane for marshalling, Chris Wilson for being the time trial holder and to Raewyne Cathie for organizing the lunch.

Thanks also to the event sponsor, Koops Cycles.
