Quite a good winter, if there is such a thing. Not too cold anyway. And now Daylight Saving is almost here again, bringing with it our regular Tuesday and Thursday Races. Weekend races will continue, squeezing into the gaps between the many events that pack the calendar between now and the end of the year. All results are posted on the website. The Club Champs are on at the start of December (see details elsewhere) – this is a social day as much as it is a racing day. Even the racing is nothing too difficult – heaps of grades and distances that are easily covered by everyone in the club. Te Puna Tavern put on a great lunch for us last year, so even if you don’t ride, come out for the food and chat after the race. Been a lot of fun over the last few years, so mark it on your calendar. The Roads Mark and Raewyne met with Transit NZ reps to discuss Cycling Club requirements in regards to the Eastern Bypass of Te Puke. This motorway will run from Domain Rd out to Paengaroa, and being a motorway, would be closed to bikes. However, the old SH2 would remain as is, and with much less traffic would become quite a good road to cycle on. The new road passes over Parton Rd, so won’t affect our access to Welcome Bay Rd from the coast. The road also cuts across our Thursday night circuit (both Te Tumu and Maketu Rds), but goes either under or over these roads. The only effect on us will be a small hill or underpass, so these popular races can continue. At the time, we asked when the road was to be built – the answer was it was on the 20 year plan. We both did the maths, and wondered if we would still be able to ride a bike by then. However, the recent road funding increase will likely see this road start much earlier, most likely in 2009 after the new bridge is completed. 2009 is not that far away really. Glass Every cyclist loves to hate it. I still don’t understand what thrill people get from smashing bottles. We are not alone – several surfers I know also suffer from broken glass in the car parking on Marine Parade. Their bare feet suffer a similar fate to our tyres, which is more painful for them, if less expensive! The good news is that Council is aware of the problem and thanks in no small part to the efforts of Iris Thomas and the rest of the good folk of Cycle Action Tauranga, some action has now been taken by Tauranga City Council. They are tackling it on two fronts: Suburban streets – Council acknowledge that 95% of glass on these roads is caused by the recycling contractors. Their trucks are being re-designed so that glass doesn’t end up on the road – some trucks are already done, the rest will be done by the end of the year. Main Routes – Council say that most of the glass on these roads is from idiots who throw bottles from cars. Their new road sweeping contractor started this month and will be sweeping these roads weekly. This is roads like Totara St, Cameron Rd, Marine Parade, Papamoa Beach Rd etc. I can confirm that Oceanbeach Rd has been swept this week and although not perfect, it was an improvement. It will probably take several sweeps to get it back to a reasonable standard. Keep sending your e-mails to Council advising them of the bad spots you come across. HYPERLINK mailto:Info@tauranga.govt.nz Info@tauranga.govt.nz or phone them on 577-7000. They do respond to the e-mails and we need to help them know where the problems are. Magpies I think most of us have been attacked by magpies at some stage and we are now at the height of their nesting season, so they are extra stroppy at the moment. One of our new members was attacked up several times up Pyes Pa Rd, but decided to see what could be done to sort the problem out. The solution is to contact Environment BOP – they dispatched someone and 3 magpies were shot. These things are officially pests, so it is good to know that they will take action. Wonder if they can do the same for the odd stroppy car driver around town……. Tuesday Night Training Rides This is by far the clubs most popular event and probably the reason many of our members joined in the first place. The Police (and motorists) have been quite tolerant of this ride and it’s up to all of us to make sure that we behave properly out on the road to ensure that the rides can continue. The committee had a review of last summers rides – consensus was that they generally went pretty well, apart from the out of control “B” group who charged around the streets with little regard for other road users. The turn across the highway was quite dodgy some nights as well. A couple of changes are planned. No. 1 is that we will go to 5 groups (we had 4 last year) – to keep the bunches smaller and to better cover rider abilities. There will be a “team leader” for each bunch. I’ve put my hand up for the “C’ group again. Please come forward if you want to do the job for the other groups. Just someone to keep an eye on things and to make sure people wait across intersections etc. The D/ E groups also like to regroup at several points, so again, that person would just keep that under control. To save me delivering a long lecture on 4th October, here is a quick recap of the Rules Of The Ride. It is a TRAINING ride, not a race. All normal road rules apply – keeping as far left as possible, giving way at roundabouts and intersections (particularly the left turn onto Maranui St/Papamoa Beach Rd and the two right hand turns, onto Parton Rd and onto SH2). Single file after the end of Marine Parade First part of the ride through The Mount / The Mall and the speedhump area of Marine Parade is a slower warm up, just go with the traffic flow – there is no hurry! Make sure that cars can get past – keep left and keep the bunch nice and tight It is a club ride – non members are welcome to try it out, but are expected to join after two rides. Keep an eye out for those without helmet stickers!! If you choose an easier bunch than normal, respect the protocols and pace of that bunch The ride officially ends by the Palmers Garden Centre – everyone tends to split off for home from there. You will need still lights for the first few weeks, particularly if it is overcast. Remember also your normal bunch riding rules NEVER overlap wheels with the bike in front. NEVER ride on your aero bars. Keep a steady speed, this avoids the bungy effect for those further back in the group Avoid sudden movements like braking, swerving or sudden acceleration You are the eyes of the riders following – point out pot holes, road kill and other hazards. Riders near the back need to advise riders ahead of cars needing to pass Keep an eye on the riders around you, if someone punctures, check if they need a hand Show courtesy to other road users. Go single file where the road is narrow. Monthly Coffee & Chat These are social get-together, once a month on a Monday evening. The idea is just to have a chat/drink away from the bikes (although you may choose to bike to the venue). Held on the first Monday of each month, 6.00pm at Coyote on The Strand. The ones we’ve had so far have been very successful, so hopefully you can join us there soon. Dates are shown on the calendar Calendar Refer to the attached calendar for all the rides that we currently know of. Note that it has been updated from the one sent out a couple of weeks ago, some extra club events added. Club Get Together with Guest Speakers – Sports Nutrition Sunday 30th October – the club is organising two guest speakers, one on sport nutrition and another talking on training. We’ll have a few drinks and nibbles also, and your partners/family are also welcome. Starts 1.30pm, ends by 4.00pm. To be held at Raewyne Cathies, 497C Joyce Rd, Tauranga Club Champs and Social Afternoon 3 events in one day – Road Race, Time Trial and Hill Climb 4 grades (A, B, C and Social Grade) Meet in the Te Puna Tavern carpark by 9.00am. Saturday 3rd December It will be held regardless of the weather. Note: You must be a financial club member to participate There will be Medals for the first 3 places overall in A B & C Grades. PLUS Gold medals for the outright winner in each of the road race and hill climb. The overall winners will be determined by points based on placings in each of the 3 events, NOT the cumulative time. 9.00am – Meet at Te Puna Tavern Car Park and registration. 9.30am – Time Trial. This race will be used to seed riders into the correct grade, and will contribute to the overall points that will determine the overall club champ in each grade. The course will be an out and back along Te Puna Road (down to the Rugby Club and back) 10.30am – Road Race., Armstrong Road circuit A Grade – 10 laps (60km) B Grade – 8 laps (48km) C Grade – 6 laps (36km) Social Grade – 4 laps (24km) 1.00pm (approx) Hill Climb Minden Rd from Tavern to Lookout – 3km Followed by lunch/drink/prizegiving/chat at the Te Puna Tavern This is open to all members, whether you ride on the day or not!
