The club continues to grow, with a new member joining up almost every week. The new committee elected at the club champs met for the first time last week and there were some great ideas to keep that momentum going. A big thanks has to go out to our immediate past president, Tony Fairweather. Tony was one of a group of us that were “press ganged” onto the committee by Leon Smith, to save the club from folding in 2001. In the five years since, the club has become much more active again and membership has more than quadrupled under Tonys guidance. Tony is busy with a new business, but is still riding most Sundays and will also be there as Head Chef at the clubs BBQ Breakfast next month. New Committee A new committee was elected at the AGM, which was again combined with the Club Champs. Our AGM’s are a little unusual – this one took all of about 5 minutes – as a club we tend to keep that side of things as informal as possible. A few others have since indicated they wish to be involved on committee, so they have been added to the list. President – Heath Lett Secretary / Treasurer – Raewyne Cathie Club Captain – Mark Ireland Committee – Brian Melville, Brian Kelly, Greg Taylor, Keith Monnington, Ross Owen, Talbot Munro, Karen McCarthy, Steve Gillet, Cameron Hill The committee meetings are normally the first Wednesday of the month. All members are welcome to attend on a casual basis – contact Raewyne if you want to know where the next meeting is. Club Jerseys – Your Design is Wanted! Attention all closet artists! The club is organising some new club jerseys and we want members to let us know what design they would like on the jerseys. Our thoughts at this stage are that: It should be something that stands out in traffic, for safety It should be distinctively “Tauranga” – something that reflects the city/region we live in It should have the club web site address on the back somewhere Should have “Tauranga” written on it. You may have other different ideas – in fact, we are open to any suggestions! The only restriction is that the colours must be primarily Blue and White. These are the clubs registered colours. Other colours can be added in no problem, but those two colours have to feature. At the web site HYPERLINK http://www.ultimoclothing.co.nz www.ultimoclothing.co.nz you can find a template of a cycling jersey to use as a basis for your design. Or just sketch up something on any old sheet of paper. Doesn’t matter how good or bad an artist you are – the manufacturer has a design service that will turn the sketch into a workable design. The committee will select the winning design and the artist/designer will win a free club jersey for their efforts. Please send your design to Tauranga Road Cycling Club PO Box 2376 Tauranga or you can e-mail to HYPERLINK mailto:taurangacyclingclub@xtra.co.nz taurangacyclingclub@xtra.co.nz. Your design must be in by 24th February, with the committee judging on 1st March. Tuesday Night Training Rides These have gone relatively smoothly this summer. Just to re-cap for newer members, here are the rules of the ride. It is a TRAINING ride, not a race. All normal road rules apply – keeping as far left as possible, giving way at roundabouts and intersections (particularly the left turn onto Maranui St/Papamoa Beach Rd and the two right hand turns, onto Parton Rd and onto SH2). Single file after the end of Marine Parade First part of the ride through The Mount / The Mall and the speedhump area of Marine Parade is a slower warm up, just go with the traffic flow – there is no hurry! Make sure that cars can get past – keep left and keep the bunch nice and tight It is a club ride – non members are welcome to try it out, but are expected to join after two rides. Keep an eye out for those without helmet stickers!! If you choose an easier bunch than normal, respect the protocols and pace of that bunch The ride officially ends by the Palmers Garden Centre – everyone tends to split off for home from there. Bunch Riding Etiquette Most club rides involve riding in a bunch. For people new to bunch riding, this can be quite a scary experience. However, there are a few basic rules that will ensure everyone has a safe ride, while enjoying the drafting effect that can save up to 30% of your energy. There have been some complaints that riders at the front are not pointing out hazards (pot holes etc). It is essential that you do so when at the front. And give enough warning for following riders to take evasive action without sudden swerving or braking. NEVER overlap wheels with the bike in front. NEVER ride on your aero bars. Keep a steady speed, this avoids the bungy effect for those further back in the group Avoid sudden movements like braking, swerving or sudden acceleration You are the eyes of the riders following – point out pot holes, glass, road kill and other hazards. Riders near the back need to advise riders ahead of cars needing to pass Keep an eye on the riders around you, if someone punctures, check if they need a hand Show courtesy to other road users. Go single file where the road is narrow. Thursday Night Races, Te Tumu These races have been very well attended this summer. If you haven’t tried them, you are missing something! This year we have also had a major spot prize once a month, which have been well received. Start time is 6.15pm, at the corner of Maketu Rd and Te Tumu Rd, a couple of minutes south of Te Puke. Sunday Morning BBQ Breakfast This is a repeat of the very successful BBQ we had last year. It will be at 9.00am on Sunday 19th February. This allows the Sunday ride to happen as normal, but Tony & Brian will have the BBQ running so that we can have a cooked breakfast on Pilot Bay when we reach The Mount. You may to choose to leave your car there so you drive home on a full stomach. Your family members are also welcome. The club will be putting on the food and drink. Club Discounts A reminder that your club membership card will get you discount at the following stores: Pennys for Cycles Koops Cycles Bike & Pack Warehouse (Central Parade, Mt MGI) Hedgehog Cycles Harvest Health (Mt Maunganui) – on all sports nutrition products Team Time Trial This event is based around a team of riders racing over a 40km circuit. You’ve probably seen it on one of the Tour De France stages on TV. In NZ, we start with a team of four riders, with three having to finish. The time is taken on the 3rd rider to cross the line. There is a regional Team Time Trial Champs in Gordonton on 8th April (open to all club members, not just licence holders) – last year the Tauranga team of John Hume, Mark Crowther, Paul Rodgers and Jasin Goldsmith took out the fastest time. However, the emphasis is on having fun as much as doing a good time. We’re keen to get a few teams across to this event. For those wanting to have a trial run, or just wanting to try it at a local level, we will be running a Team Time Trial out at Te Tumu Rd circuit on 18th March. Start thinking of a team you can put together now. And if you don’t have a team, come along anyway, we will make up some teams out of any individuals that turn up out there. Be there by 12.30, so we can organise teams for a 1.00pm start. Individual Time Trial Champs A few weeks after the team event, the club will be holding its individual time trial champs, also at Te Tumu Rd, on 15th April at 1.00pm. Riders start at minute intervals, and no drafting is permitted. The drafting box (distance you must keep away from other riders) in cycle races is 25m x 2m, a lot less than in triathlons. Time Trials are very much a love ‘em or hate ‘em kind of thing. For me, they fall into the latter category, but don’t let that put you off! As a Club Champ event, there is trophy up for grabs also. On 29th April, the Waikato BOP 40km Time Trial champs is on, so the club one on the 15th is an ideal practice run. Note that the Waikato BOP one is open to all club members, you don’t need a racing licence, just your club card. Other Events There are quite a few other fun rides and races around the area in coming months. Keep an eye out for your fellow club members (just look for the red helmet sticker) and if you don’t know them, introduce yourself. It’s quite nice to go to do these rides with others from the same town. A great place to get to know others in the club is at our Monday night Coyote Bar & Restaurant nights. First Monday of every month at 6.00pm at Coyote on The Strand. A good opportunity to relax and chat over a few drinks. They always put on some food for us and some end up staying for a meal as well. See the calendar for dates. Results Results of club races can be found on the club web site ( HYPERLINK http://www.taurangacyclingclub.co.nz www.taurangacyclingclub.co.nz) along with photos of club rides. If you have a story on any ride you’ve done recently, please forward it on, so we can post it on the web site for others to read. That’s all for this month, we’ll keep you updated as new information comes to hand. њ ћ ! ?
