It is light before 6.00am and most of us could consider going for a ride either before or after work. The Club is pleased to provide information about a new Spring series to be held at the Armstrong Road circuit along with a Spring Time Trial series at Oropi Road. We hope all members will consider supporting these events. SPRING SERIES The Club is holding an 8-lap event at the Armstrong Road, Tauranga circuit. The first race will be a mass start and the next 4 races will be handicap races. The dates of the Spring series are as follows: Saturday 20 September 2008 Saturday 27 September 2008 Saturday 11 October 2008 Saturday 18 October 2008 Saturday 25 October 2008 Entry fee of $2 for members and $5 for non-members. There will be one price pool for all cyclists of $300 and the series will be run on points similar to the winter series. We need all participants to have registered by 1.30pm for a 2.00pm start. As this is a handicap, everybody in the Club will have a similar chance of winning the series and obviously those members who attend all 5 races will have the most likely chance of success. If Club members cannot attend all or say 4 of the races, please still consider attending the races as they are particularly good training. If you are training for a longer race such as the K2 or Around Lake Taupo, may I suggest that you ride out to the venue, register, do a warm-up lap, complete the race and then ride home taking in the likes of Crawford Road and the Minden as part of your warm-down etc. AVANTI PLUS TAURANGA CYCLING CLUB SPRING TIME TRIAL SERIES Every Wednesday 1 October 2008 through to 11 December. Meet 5.45pm for 6pm start at the bottom of Oropi Road (start is opposite the golf course entrance.) Finish is at the Oropi Hall opposite the white letterbox. 11.25km 330m climb. Winner receives a $20 store voucher redeemable at Avanti Plus Mount Maunganui or Tauranga. Points are allocated for placing based on average time, each night, and overall series winner receives a $120 store voucher redeemable from Avanti Plus Mount Maunganui or Tauranga. Results will be sent to participants by email. Open to Tauranga Cycling Club financial members only. You will note that there is no cost to enter the Spring Time Trial series and the Club would like to thank Avanti Plus for sponsoring this series. CLUB JERSEYS Club jerseys are still available at Koops Cycles/Avanti Plus, corner of 17th Avenue and Cameron Road, Tauranga. We would like to have as many of our members riding in Club jerseys so can all members seriously consider buying a Club jersey. A Club jersey would make an ideal Christmas present. COURTENEY LOWE Courteney attended the Adelaide/Canberra tour and we are including an article that Courteney has written for Club members. Adelaide/Canberra tour 2008 In July I got selected along with 5 other under 19 females from over the North and South island to represent New Zealand at the Canberra and Adelaide cycling tours. We arrived in Sydney on July 2nd and travelled to Canberra, where we stayed at the AIS (Australia institute of sport). Having two free days before racing we built up our bikes and went out to Stromlo Park where we drove the courses. Friday morning was the first day of racing, including a 15km tt. We put on our aero bars and rode to Stromlo Park with the team managers and mechanic. After a good hour warm up we lined up with some of the top Australian women close behind us. The course was rolling with no flat at all, a slight side wind made it seem a lot more challenging. This resulting in a 10th placing in the under 19 grade, as time trialing is not my strong point I was reasonably happy. After riding back to the AIS we had a big dinner and a meeting with our team manager to sort out race tactics for the road race the next day. Early Saturday morning we rode out to Stromlo Park again. Lining up with around 50 other competitors, under 19 and open women, we set off for a very hilly 40km road race. The pace seemed to go on in the first 2 kms and kept going to the end, I got in a bunch of 21 who managed to drop the rest of the field, staying in this bunch until the finish. Straight after we got back on our bikes for the warm down and rested for our criterium later on in the day. We then lined up again, around 2 hours later on the Stromlo Park, man-made criterium course. This being a 40 minutes plus 3 laps race. It consisted of attack after attack but no-one managed to get away, finishing with a bunch sprint again, personally resulting in a 6th placing for under 19. After the warm down we went back to the AIS, had dinner and had another tactics meeting. Sunday morning we got up early and rode to the course, lining up for a 72km VERY hilly road race. This would have been the hardest race I have ever completed. Hills around 5km long, the Australians liked to attack from bottom to top, and then at the top they attacked again!? I got in a break away of 16, containing 5 under 19 and the rest open women. Finishing the tour with a 5th place overall for under 19. We then rode back to the AIS and packed up our bikes. The next morning we drove to Canberra airport and flew to Melbourne, we then hopped onto another plane to Adelaide. Driving about an hour out of Adelaide to Mt Barker. We stayed in a tiny caravan park in the Mt Barker town. We had 4 days to rest and train and get ready for the next 3 days of racing. During these days we road all the stages and took a day trip to Adelaide to do some much needed shopping. Friday morning we road to Brukunga for the 10km TT, this consisted of 5km uphill and 5km down hill, luckily there was hardly any wind to contest with. I achieved a 5th place out of around 20 open women riders. The next morning we had a 32 km race, which contained an extremely steep 1.5km climb with a QOM (queen of the mountain) at the top, I Managed to get first over the QOM line with the help of my team mates, I then got in a 4 person break away, achieving a 3rd place over the finish line. That afternoon we had a 52km road race containing a long (around 10km) gradual hill climb. 7 of us got in a break away at the start of the climb and stayed away until the end, I got a 3rd placing over the QOM line. The next day we did 2 laps of the course with the very steep hill, the first time we went over the hill I got 3rd and also got in a 6 person breakaway, the 2nd time over the hill I got 2nd and then 5th place over the finish line. Finally, we rode back to Mt Barker to race the last stage, the criterium, this was a 40minute plus 3 laps. Very strong winds made this really challenging, stayed mostly together in the bunch we dropped about a quarter of the field finishing with a bunch sprint. Overall I came 3rd in the under 19 category and 1st in the QOM for the open women category. That night we went to an Italian restaurant for dinner and stayed up to watch one of the hilly stages of the tour de France. On the 14th of July we left Adelaide and arrived back in Auckland at 6pm. This trip was an amazing experience and I am looking forward to carrying on with my cycling and attending much more races like these. Thank you for the article Courteney and all the best with your cycling. If members are aware of any events that we have not noted on the website, please email us.
