Good racing has been held over the five days in which the series has been run. The winners on points were as follows: 1st John Skelton 233 points 2nd Steve Crowther 225 points 3rd Mark Crowther 191 points Thanks to all who attended along with Brian Melville who, prior to race starting, set out the security signs, swept the corners and marshalled whilst the race was on. MOTU CHALLENGE I noted some very good results from Tauranga Cycling Club members at the recent Motu Challenge. Simon Binney did the mountain bike leg with Ashley Hough doing the road bike leg for the winning Tauranga Boys College team. Grier Fuller combined with his wife Jill to win the mixed two-person team, with Griers wife Jill doing the run leg and Grier doing the mountain bike, road bike and the kayak leg. The mixed four-person team was won by noted Tauranga athletes, with Ash Hough doing the mountain bike, Rick Lowe the road run, Courteney Lowe the road bike, with Courteneys sister Hannah Lowe doing the kayak leg. Hamish Lane and Tim Grammer combined to place third in the Open Men x 2 Team. Well done to you guys. K2 1 November 2008 I noted some very good results from Tauranga Cycling Club members. The event was somewhat marred by the accident which occurred with one of the cyclists in the lead bunch. There were over 600 entries in the K2 race, which is a grueling 194 km ride around the Coromandel Peninsula. Noting the gun time, I would list the results at the top end of the results with the competitors name, place overall and category place, and their elapsed time: Name Place Category Place Gun Time Mark Crowther 5th 2nd 5:34:33 Steve Came 9th 2nd 5:34:34 John Cobbald 16th 1st 5:44:21 Heath Lett 25th 7th 5:46:15 Hamish Lane 26th 8th 5:46:17 Paul de Rijk 45th 7th 5:49:09 Richard Coffey 61st 4th 5:51:29 Well done to all Club members who successfully completed the K2. CLUB NATIONALS Nationals Labour weekend 2008 Wanganui One thing you can guarantee when racing in Wanganui is hills. They love hills. The longer and steeper the better. The fact you are riding close to the coast facing the Southwest generally guarantees wind and any clouds mean rain. Racing in Wanganui is challenging and fun and Nationals provides the best racing you can get. In my grade 50 54 we had 40 tough old brutes for the road race. Most of whom I knew from past years. The racing was close and hard. No learners here to worry about. The guys attacked the whole way around like we were Under 17's. The last 5 km consisted of a 3.5km climb then 1.5 km flat run into the finish. Being relatively light the last hill was not a problem but the attacks of the previous 60 km had taken its toll and the legs were not able to deliver a medal in the sprint to the finish. In the Masters 3 Mark Crowther was fuming after his finish. 2 Ramblers (Hawkes Bay) riders got away and every time a chase group started rotating two other Rambler riders would come through, slow down and stop the group working together. A bunch contested the sprint for third and unfortunately it was not a Tauranga jersey. The star of our team was Courteney Lowe. She won a Silver medal in the time trial and was in a bunch of 7 going for the medals in the road race. Clearly the strongest road rider but not (yet) the best sprinter. For a first year in the U 19 womens grade Courteney shows great promise. The girl who beat her by 5 seconds in the TT was on a proper TT bike while Courteney only had clip on aero bars. Third place was more than 50 seconds behind. Watch this space. TT Results U19 Women Courteney Lowe 2nd 23.06. Winner 23.01 U 19 Men Phil Hudson 25km, 12th 34.22. MEMBERSHIP Club membership for the 2008-2009 season, which runs from 1 November 2008 to 31 October 2009 is currently due The Committee thanks all existing and new members who have paid their subscriptions. Can everybody else please ensure that they pay their subscriptions as soon as possible. The cost of membership is not far away from tickets for two at the movies and a couple of ice creams so, with what is available, Club membership is a very cheap form of entertainment. CLUB JERSEYS Remember Club jerseys are available at Koops Cycles, Corner of 17th Avenue and Cameron Road or via the Club Custodian, Brian Melville, on phone 541 0499. The jerseys are being sold at the actual cost price to the Club. They look good and would make a great Christmas present. SPORTS MASSAGE Kirsty Somers-Edgar is a recent addition to our cycling club.
